Hi there,
I'm about to solve the biggest problem you have when it comes to your professional development. Time. Lack of time is the most persistent objection to working on development that I hear from clients. There isn't time to stop working and sit in training. Well… who said that you have to?
The Center for Creative Leadership developed a research-backed framework called OSF which outlines how managers learn and grow over time. The framework explains that 70% of learning comes from on-the-job experiences, 20% comes from social learning (through relationships), and only 10% comes from formal training.
If only 10% of learning comes from formal training, why is that the first thing you look for when you have a skill gap? You can learn from the experiences you’re having every day at work and improve without needing to take time away from work. If you’re not sure how, I can sum it up in 1 word.
Reflection.
If you are more observant as you go through your day, you build a reflection habit that turns every situation into an opportunity for growth. It’s helpful to write down your observations because that makes it easier to spot trends over time. Here are two resources for journaling about work.
Disclaimer: OF COURSE there is a place for formal training and you should make time to do it! This is not an either or situation.
Hit reply and say ‘hi’ - wether you’re an OG subscriber or just stumbled across this, I would love to hear from you. What do YOU want from a newsletter like this? How can I help you banish your Sunday scaries? Let me know.
📚 What I’m reading: Turtles All The Way Down, John Green
This one came out seven years ago but has renewed buzz because it was made into a movie released on Max earlier this month. The book is acclaimed to have one of the most realistic depictions of OCD… a topic near to my heart because I have a loved one with OCD and I’m always trying to better understand their life experience.
Content Round Up - In Case You Missed It
Even if you’re following me on social media, the algorithm may or may not put my post in your feed. Here is what has launched over the last 2 weeks, in case you missed it.
Introducing guest speakers in meetings - VIDEO
When you invite a speaker to your meeting, it’s helpful to give the context for why the topic is important. It motivates the team to pay attention and makes the speaker feel appreciated.
Game to play during long and boring meetings - VIDEO
A work buddy and I used to play this word game during our monthly business reviews… which were terribly long and boring meetings. You should try it because it added some fun when we needed it desperately.
Script for when you say the wrong thing at work - VIDEO
We are all human, and sometimes we say the wrong thing. This video gives a script for how you could respond in that moment.
You made it to the end! Congrats & thanks. ❤️ Have a great two weeks.
Stay Curious,
Kristy
